If you’ve ever tried to eat healthier, start exercising more often, or lose weight, chances are, you’ve fallen off the wagon once or twice.
And do you know what that means? You’re human.
Whenever we challenge ourselves with a new routine or lifestyle choice, we throw our brains for a loop.
We branch out from what we already know, and our minds need a little extra time to catch up.
And that’s okay!
The important thing is to keep moving in the right direction and get back on your plan as soon as possible.
So if you’ve ever asked, “how do I get back on track with my diet?” then you’re in the right place. Because that’s exactly what we’re here to talk about today.
How to Get Back On Track With My Diet: 7 Simple Strategies
Whenever you find that you’ve strayed from your wellness plan, the first step is to start fresh with a clean slate.
And remember; starting fresh can happen at any time.
You don’t have to wait for a new day, week, or month.
If you realize you slipped, start fresh with the next meal or opportunity to move your body.
Every moment throughout the day, you have the chance to make a positive choice. Seize that opportunity to begin again.
If you can, do a quick journaling session. Write out what you’re feeling, your current thoughts surrounding your situation, and how you want it to improve.
Then, end the entry with: “And now I’m starting fresh by doing XYZ.”
This may seem like a silly step, but humor me and give it a try.
Next time you slip, grab a piece of paper, write down how you’re feeling for 3-5 minutes, and then make a plan to start fresh. I think you’ll be surprised by the positive impact this simple step has on your progress.
Make a Plan
The next step to get back on track when your diet slips is to make a plan.
Grab your meal prep calendar (or snag this awesome one here!) and map out exactly what you are going to eat each day for the next week.
If you are planning to incorporate exercise, schedule your sweat sessions in your calendar as well. Make them a non-negotiable.
When you map out a plan, you remove the guesswork and you set yourself up for success. You’ll get back on track in no time.
As I mentioned above, meal prepping is key.
You see, one of the biggest challenges we have when it comes to sticking with a new eating plan is having healthy food on hand at all times.
I’ll be the first to admit that on busy days after work, the last thing I want to do is spend hours in the kitchen. In fact, it’s times like this when it feels entirely too easy to rely on fast food instead.
And that, my friend, is when the trouble begins.
When you take time to meal prep once per week, however, you remove that pitfall.
By removing the need to prepare your meal on busy nights, you can get a healthy, delicious meal on the table in minutes. And that, my friend, is the secret to success.

Increase Your Water Intake
We’ve all heard about the benefits of drinking enough water, right?
At the most basic level, it helps keep us hydrated, but it is also key to helping us stick with our weight loss goals.
You see, many of us often confuse hunger for thirst, so we end up eating more than our body requires.
By drinking more water, we help prevent that from happening.
If this sounds like an easy fix, it is! Yet for some reason, so many of us struggle with it.
If you’re looking for one of the easiest ways to get back on track with your diet, make sure you’re drinking at least 64 ounces of water per day.

Remember How Far You’ve Come
Whether you need to get back on track with your diet, or you’re feeling discouraged about your progress, a great way to rediscover your motivation is to remember how far you’ve come.
I am a big fan of tracking my progress (see the next tip about habit trackers below) because any time I’m feeling discouraged, I can see how far I’ve come.
Whether you look back at old pictures, re-read past journal entries, or simply reflect upon where you began, making time for this important reminder is a great way to get back on track.
Track Your Habits – Don’t Break the Chain
If you’re ready to both get back on track and stay on track with your diet, then using a habit tracker is a fantastic strategy to help you get there.
You see, there is something incredibly rewarding about tracking your progress; we experience a powerful feeling of encouragement and accomplishment each time we check off a box and stick with our habits another day.
In fact, there’s even a term for this; Gretchen Rubin calls this the “don’t break the chain” mentality; when you’ve created an impressive streak of consistency, it gets harder and harder to break the chain.
By using a habit tracker for your wellness goals, you hold yourself accountable to the tracker. You can track both your consistency and your progress, both of which are incredibly rewarding.

Perhaps one of the best ways to get back on track with your diet or wellness goals is to create accountability.
Whether you team up with a friend, join an online fitness group (check out my free group here!) or work with a wellness coach, having that accountability is key to helping you finally reach your goals.
It provides you with the nudge you need when your motivation wanes. What’s more, you’re surrounded by others who are there to celebrate with you when you’ve reached the next milestone.
